A United States soldier based in South Korea has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for the rape of an 18-year-old Korean teenager.

The sentence, handed down by the Uijeongbu District Court, is among the most lengthy given to a U.S. soldier in South Korea.

The BBC reported that the soldier – a 21-year-old U.S. Army private whose name has not been released – broke into the woman's studio in Dongducheon, Gyeonggi Province on September 24.

The man was intoxicated, and threatened the woman with scissors during a sexual attacked that lasted a period of several hours.

The Korea Herald said the court also ordered that the soldier to carry out 80 hours of a sexual violence treatment program.

In handing down the sentence, judge Park In-sik said:

“The cruel and perverse acts that the accused committed for three hours after breaking into the victim’s studio apartment was enough to cause her fear and sexual humiliation in the sanctity of her own home. The strict punishment for the accused is appropriate, considering that there was not any agreed upon compensation for the victim.”

Following the incident, the U.S. military also apologized and imposed a month-long late-night curfew on its troops.
