Anders Behring Breivik is 'insane,' should get treatment, say prosecutors

Prosecutors in the trial of Anders Behring Breivik have asked for him to be considered insane and sent to a psychiatric facility, not prison.

Anders Behring Breivik should be considered insane and put into psychiatric care, prosecutors have said.

Breivik is on trial in Norway for killing 77 people in Oslo and Utoeya last July. He claims to have carried out the killings to halt mounting "Islamization."

In closing arguments today, the BBC reported, prosecutors said they could not be sure whether or not he was mentally ill – but that there was enough doubt to justify putting him in compulsory treatment.

According to the network, prosecutor Svein Holden said that "it was worse to sentence a psychotic person to prison than to place a non-psychotic person in psychiatric care."

If found sane and therefore responsible for his crimes, Breivik faces up to 21 years in prison, CNN said.

Psychiatrists who assessed Breivik gave conflicting diagnoses, with one report declaring him a paranoid schizophrenic and another finding him disturbed but rational.

Testifying earlier this week, the authors of the latter report said that Breivik himself sees himself as sane and expects to go to prison, the Guardian reported.

That's what the vast majority of Norwegians want, according to the Views and News from Norway website: a recent opinion poll showed 75 percent thought Breivik should be jailed, while just 10 percent said he should be committed to psychiatric care.

The defense will conclude its case tomorrow. A verdict is expected in July or August.
