#LondonPoo: South Londoners are apparently having a really crappy time

Late last night in London #poonami began trending.

Why, you ask?

A pipe burst, flooding Clapham Road in Kennington, South London, with what looked like a deluge of excrement. The murky river, which trapped residents in their homes and flooded basement flats, triggered the catchy hashtag #londonpoo.

Local residents took to Twitter to voice their ‘solids-arity’ in facing the swampy conditions. Political editor for tabloid newspaper The Sun, Tom Newton, posted this message:

Workmen descended upon the street in the early hours of this morning to start the cleanup operation, but some onlookers observed that their efforts to remove the brown mud were futile. London Telegraph newspaper journalist Lewis Whyld tweeted this valuation, while watching firefighters drag a large yellow hose-like object through the muck:

Whyld was also able to catch the workmen in action while they assessed the situation and a lone pedestrian trudged through the stream behind them:

Luckily, it was later confirmed by a Thames Water spokesman that the dirty water was not the result of a sewage leak, but a gushing water main mixing with mud and silt. 

But the Brits did not pass up the occasion to make light of the situation, cracking more than one potty-related joke. One Twitter user, Sue Perkins, posted: “Ironic that South London’s No. 2 bus is having difficulty with its route…”
