Yemen's state media said a car bomb attack near the capital today killed at least 11 soldiers and wounded over a dozen, according to Lebanon's Al Manar TV

A security official cited by The Associated Press said the bomb was detonated near an army checkpoint in the town of Radda south of the capital Sanaa, killing a number of officers as well as the bomber. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Militants have strengthened their hold in Yemen over the past year, taking advantage of political unrest to move into large areas of land.

Al Jazeera said today's violence was likely a "retaliatory move" after government forces reportedly shelled a militant-held southern province as part of an ongoing anti-insurgent campaign.

The US considers Yemen's al-Qaida network one of the world's most dangerous, said AP
