At least 22 people are dead after a fuel truck crashed into a flyover in the Saudi capital of Riyadh on Thursday, causing an explosion which brought down a building and burned nearby vehicles.

According to Reuters, an additional 135 people have been injured by the disaster.

A civil defense official who spoke to the AFP, said that explosion was caused by a gas leak that occurred when the truck hit the bridge pylon.

"The explosion and fire happened after leaked gas filled the area. Huge damage happened, in addition to many traffic collisions," he said, adding there were fatalities without specifying how many.

Lt. Gen. Saad Abdullah Al-Twaijri, director general of civil defense, told Arab News that the number of casualties would most likely increase as rescuers searched the wreckage of the building.
