SASKATOON - The president of the University of Saskatchewan says the school is not in financial trouble despite layoffs, program cuts and a projected $3.3 million operating deficit.

The university expects to eliminate up to 200 positions by the end of June.

Ilene Busch-Vishniac (bush-VIZH-nee-ak) told the Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce that without belt-tightening the university would be about $44 million in the red within a few years.

She says the university is also trying to resolve problems with its College of Medicine, which is under probation.

She says they are looking at how to improve the structure of the college.

In March the university announced a tuition increase of 4.5 per cent.
