SAINTE-ANNE-DE-SOREL, Qc - A member of the Hells Angels who escaped from a Quebec prison this month has been found dead _ just as police were apparently closing in on him.
Rene Charlebois was found dead early Thursday at a property on an island in Sainte-Anne-de-Sorel, Que., northeast of Montreal.
The 48-year-old convict escaped from the Laval Penitentiary on Sept. 14.
He had been serving an indeterminate sentence since 2003 for second-degree murder, conspiracy to murder, drug trafficking and participation in gang activity.
Charlebois had risen through the ranks of the biker gang and join the Nomads, the elite Hells group, in 2000.
He was one of the top lieutenants of gang leader Maurice "Mom" Boucher.
Following Charlebois‘ escape. Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney ordered the Correctional Service to review security classification for violent and dangerous inmates to ensure they're appropriately imprisoned.
