TORONTO - Some of the most active companies traded Tuesday on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX Venture Exchange:

Toronto Stock Exchange (Unchanged at 13,361.78 points):

Encana Corp. (TSX:ECA). Natural gas. Up 62 cents, or 3.34 per cent, at $19.21 on 16.52 million shares. The natural gas giant said it will shed 20 per cent off its workforce, slash its dividend and spin off a chunk of its Alberta land holdings into a new public company as it deals with persistently low prices.

Bombardier Inc. (TSX:BBD.B). Transportation equipment. Down a penny, or 0.22 per cent, at $4.53 on 9.24 million shares.

Marengo Mining Ltd. (TSX:MRN). Miner. Down half a cent, or 20 per cent, at two cents on 5.63 million shares.

Twin Butte Energy Ltd. (TSX:TBE). Oil and gas. Down six cents, or 2.71 per cent, at $2.15 on 5.18 million shares. The Calgary-based company said it has completed the acquisition of privately-held Black Shire Energy Inc. for $358 million in cash and stock, including $107.6 million in assumed debt.

Paladin Labs (TSX:PLB). Pharmaceutical. Up $31.59 or 49.43 per cent, at $95.50 on 4.48 million shares. Endo Health signed a deal to buy the Canadian specialty drug maker in a cash-and-stock deal pegged at about C$1.6 billion. Both Endo and Montreal-based Paladin will then be folded into a newly-formed Irish holding company.

Toronto Venture Exchange (945.66 down 6.86 points):

Petromanas Energy Inc. (TSXV:PMI). Oil and gas. Up 1.5 cents, or 13.04 per cent, at 13 cents on 51.34 million shares.

Northern Iron Corp.(TSXV:NFE). Miner. Up half a cent, or 50 per cent, at 1.5 cents on 3.97 million shares.

Companies reporting major news:

Rogers Communications (TSX:RCI.B). Media and telecommunications. Down 40 cents, or 0.85 per cent, at $46.88 on 642,351 shares. The country's second-largest telecommunications company laid off 94 employees in its media division, which includes the broadcast TV operations of Citytv and OMNI, as well as radio stations and magazines like Maclean's and Chatelaine.

Open Text (TSX:OTC). Software. Up $7.77, or 10.02 per cent, at $85.32 on 1.13 million shares. The company is buying U.S.-based cloud-technology provider GXS Group in a cash-and-stock deal valued at about $1.17 billion.

Silver Wheaton Corp. (TSX:SLW). Miner. Up 30 cents, or 1.30 per cent, at $23.32 on 1.12 million shares. Silver Wheaton has signed a deal to acquire half of the gold produced by Hudbay Minerals Inc. (TSX:HBM) at the Constancia mining project, currently under construction in southern Peru.

WestJet Airlines (TSX:WJA). Airline. Up 20 cents, or 0.73 per cent, at $27.50 on 442,984 shares. Canada's second-largest airline reported its 34th consecutive profitable quarter during the July-September period, earning $65.1 million or 50 cents per diluted share, down 7.8 per cent from a year earlier. Total revenue grew nearly seven per cent to $924.8 million.
