Syria 'breaking up before everyone's eyes' -envoy tells UN

UNITED NATIONS, Jan 29 (Reuters) - U.N.-Arab League mediator Lakhdar Brahimi told the U.N. Security Council on Tuesday that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad may be able to cling to power for now but the country is "breaking up before everyone's eyes," diplomats told Reuters.

"The Syrian regime's legitimacy has been seriously, probably irreparably, damaged," Brahimi told the 15-nation council behind closed doors, council diplomats present at the meeting quoted him as saying. (Reporting by Louis Charbonneau; Editing by Will Dunham)
