NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman broke his right fibula and dislocated his ankle upon landing from a parachute jump for charity in Florida, the team said on Monday. Jamaican sprinter Mullings loses appeal against life ban
BERNE (Reuters) - Jamaican sprinter Steve Mullings has lost his appeal against a lifetime ban from athletics, imposed in November 2011 for a second doping offense, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) said on Monday. Mullings, 30, who won a gold medal in the 4x100 meters relay at the 2009 world championships in Berlin, tested positive for testosterone in 2004 and for the banned diuretic furosemide in 2011.
Carolina netminder Ward to miss six to eight weeks
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Cam Ward is expected to miss six to eight weeks with a sprained knee ligament, the NHL team said on Monday, dealing the Southeast Division leaders a serious blow. Ward was injured midway through the second period of Carolina's 3-2 win over Florida on Sunday, and the injury could sideline him through the end of the regular season, which ends on April 27 for Carolina.

Alaska's Iditarod sled-dog race begins in earnest from frozen lake
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) - Competition in the famed sled-dog race known as the Iditarod began in earnest on Sunday as 65 mushers and their canine teams set off from a frozen lake to venture into the snowy Alaska wilderness. The Iditarod's official restart, a day after a ceremonial launch in Anchorage, was staged on an ice-covered lake in Willow, a small community about 80 miles north of Alaska's biggest city.
