MLB Team Report - Los Angeles Dodgers - INSIDE PITCH
Dodgers infielder Hanley Ramirez defied the original prognosis and returned well ahead of schedule from his thumb injury this spring. He wants to do the same again, but the Dodgers are being cautious as he recovers from a strained left hamstring.
"They know what's happened before to guys that try to come back early and it didn't work," Ramirez said. "(Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp) told me you have to be 100 percent and don't try to come back early. By the time I get back, I want to make it all the way to the end of the season."
Last year, Kemp went on the DL with a hamstring injury in May, returned for two games and went back on the DL for six weeks after reinjuring it.
Ramirez has begun running the curve of the infield this weekend and has been taking batting practice and fielding ground balls on a daily basis. He could begin a minor-league injury-rehabilitation assignment at some point this week. But Dodgers manager Don Mattingly remains cautious.
"I'm not the guy having the talk with Hanley about if you're ready or not," Mattingly said. "I'm the one throwing some caution out there every once in a while about slowing down.
"Hanley told me he was going to be ready today, last week. I am trying to hold him back a little because I know he is not ready yet."
MLB Team Report - Los Angeles Dodgers - NOTES, QUOTES
STREAK: Lost one
PAST 10 GAMES: 4-6
NEXT: Dodgers (Zack Greinke 2-1, 3.48) vs. Angels (C.J. Wilson 4-3, 3.39)
--RHP Zack Greinke is back on the mound Monday as the Dodgers open their Freeway Series against the Los Angeles Angels on Monday after getting the loss Tuesday in Milwaukee while allowing five runs on nine hits in four innings. Greinke walked three, struck out one and threw 90 pitches. Against the Angels Greinke will be facing his former teammates for the first time since leaving Anaheim for the Dodgers as a free agent last winter. Greinke is 1-4 with a 3.70 ERA in eight career games against the Angels.
--CF Matt Kemp, who has been scuffling all year, was visibly upset Saturday when he was removed in a double-switch in the top of the seventh inning against the St. Louis Cardinals, yelling in the dugout in the direction of manager Don Mattingly. Kemp said afterward he wasn't upset with Mattingly, just frustrated in how he's struggling." I was just frustrated. It had been a bad day for me. I didn't do much to help the team win," Kemp said. It is what it is, it's over with now." Mattingly said lifting Kemp had nothing to do with his play but rather out of need to enable reliever Kenley Jansen to pitch two innings if need be. "It was the right move," Mattingly said. "This has nothing to do with Matt struggling. It was a baseball move. I don't like doing it, but I was at the point with the 'pen where I knew I needed to get one-plus (innings) out of Kenley." Kemp was not in the starting lineup Sunday but made a pinch-hit appearance in the eighth and promptly grounded into an inning-ending double play.
--1B Adrian Gonzalez reached base in all five plate appearances Saturday against the Cardinals, going 3-for-3 with a home run, double and single and drove in three runs. Gonzalez leads Dodgers qualifiers in all three Triple Crown categories with a .316 batting average, six home runs and 36 RBIs. Gonzalez is batting .436 with runners in scoring position, the fourth-best mark in the National League. Gonzalez had a two-run home run and an RBI single Sunday against the Cardinals.
--IF Nick Punto tied a season high with three hits Saturday, raising his batting average to .340 in 38 games this season. Among National League batters with 100 at-bats, Punto is tied for fourth in batting average and ranks third with a .427 on-base percentage. Punto has also come through in the clutch, batting .361 (13 for 36) with runners on base and hitting .294 (5 for 17) with runners in scoring position.
--IF/OF Jerry Hariston Jr. made his second rehab start Saturday night for Single-A Rancho Cucamonga against Visalia. The veteran played five innings in left field and went 0-for-2 at the plate. Hairston has been on the disabled list since May 27 with a strained left groin and was a candidate to return Sunday, but the Dodgers opted not to make the move.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "That's a good, professional hitting team over there that battles. They were grinding, putting good swings on." -- C A.J. Ellis on the St. Louis Cardinals after a loss Sunday.
