Diamondbacks 5, Rangers 4: Cliff Pennington doubled inside the first-base line with one out in the bottom of the ninth to give host Arizona a sweep of a day-night doubleheader with Texas.
Miguel Montero began the ninth with a double into the right-field corner against Jason Frasor (0-1). There were runners on first and second with one out when the right-handed hitting Pennington delivered the game-winning blow off left-hander Robbie Ross to score Montero and give the Diamondbacks a 1 1/2-game lead over the San Francisco Giants in the National League West.
Texas ace Yu Darvish matched his career high with 14 strikeouts but was touched for a game-tying two-run homer by Didi Gregorius with one out in the eighth. Diamondbacks reliever Brad Ziegler (2-1) recorded the final out of the top of the ninth before Arizona won in the bottom of the inning.
Gregorius also smacked a run-scoring triple into the right-field corner in the first and scored on a sacrifice fly by Eric Chavez. Texas recovered to take a 3-2 lead in the sixth on a single by A.J. Pierzynski and tacked on another run on a fielder’s choice by Craig Gentry.
Arizona starter Trevor Cahill allowed four runs (three earned) and seven hits in eight innings. Darvish allowed four runs and seven hits and didn’t walk anyone.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Darvish has five double-digit strikeout games this season, including three outings of 14. … Arizona won the opener 5-3 as rookie Tyler Skaggs struck out nine and allowed three hits in six shutout innings. … Rangers veteran Lance Berkman played first base in the nightcap for his first defensive action of the season.
