RHP David Phelps was hammered for a career-high nine runs in 2 1/3 innings on June 29 by the Orioles, serving up two homers on hanging curveballs. It was an ugly blip on an otherwise solid June in which he went 2-1 with a 2.66 ERA in his four other starts. Phelps comes in with no history against the Twins and certainly not at Target Field.
RHP Mariano Rivera earned his 28th save of the season and 636th overall. It was his 35th save against the Twins.
LHP CC Sabathia allowed two runs on seven hits with three walks and nine strikeouts in a win over Minnesota. He has walked three batters or more just three times this season. Sabathia earned his 200th career win -- he is the 27th pitcher in MLB history, and eighth since the expansion era (1961), to win his 200th career game before turning 33. Sabathia is now 11-0 in his last 12 regular season and postseason starts against the Twins (since Aug. 3, 2007).
RF Ichiro Suzuki (1-for-4) hit his eighth double of the season in the sixth inning. He has feasted on the Twins. Lifetime against Minnesota he is hitting .321 (141-for-439) with eight doubles, seven triples, four home runs, 26 RBI, with 21 walks in 103 games.
INF Jayson Nix was placed on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to July 2) with a right hamstring strain. That diminishes the Yankee bench to two players -- Vernon Wells and Austin Romine -- before the signing of Luis Cruz.
2B Robinson Cano (2-for-3) extended his current hitting streak to six games with a single in the first inning. He doubled in two runs in his third plate appearance. He has multi-hit games in each of his six games during the streak. In those six games he is hitting .583 (14-for-24) with four home runs and 10 RBI.
INF Luis Cruz was signed Wednesday. Cruz appeared in 45 games with the Dodgers before being designated for assignment on June 28. He was batting .127 (15-for-118) with two doubles, one home run and six RBI. Cruz was 0-for-3 in the game and had one throwing error at shortstop against the Twins.
