LHP Drew Pomeranz will make his second start of the season since being recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs. He gave up four runs and two homers in his first start, a 5-2 loss to San Francisco and is 2-11 in parts of two major league seasons. He was 8-1 with a 4.20 ERA in 15 starts at Colorado Springs before his recall. Pomeranz is 0-1 with an 8.03 ERA in two starts against Arizona in 2012.
LHP Jorge De La Rosa, who was 8-4 in 20 career appearances against the D-backs, gave up seven hits and three runs in 5 1/3 innings of his fourth start against the D-backs this season. "It probably wasn't his sharpest night but I thought he kept them close enough, gave us a chance. But he had to be flawless (Friday) the way we got shut down offensively," Colorado manager Walt Weiss said. De La Rosa was 2-1 with a 1.56 ERA in his previous three starts against the D-backs this season.
RF Michael Cuddyer beat out an infield single in the seventh inning Friday to continue his remarkable run. He has hit safely in 30 of Colorado's the last 31 games after having a 27-game streak stopped Tuesday. Cuddyer, hitting .342, praised Arizona LHP Tyler Skaggs, who gave up three singles in eighth innings. "He reminded me of Barry Zito when he was with Oakland," Cuddyer said "He had a two-seamer (fastball) away and then in the middle innings he started throwing that curveball, which is a plus, plus curveball. It was very reminiscent of Zito."
SS Troy Tulowitzki (fractured right rib) took batting practice for the second day in a row Friday and appears to closer to returning after being out since June 14. Manager Walt Weiss said he was encouraged after watching Tulowitzki's recent work, and it appears his target return is a four-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers that begins July 11. Tulowitzki was off to a strong start before the injury, hitting .347 with 16 doubles, 16 home runs and 51 RBIs.
LF Carlos Gonzalez was held out Friday after suffering a strained upper back against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday. Gonzalez, who left in the sixth inning after striking out in the last of the fifth, led the National League in runs (65), home runs (23), total bases (199) and extra-base hits (50). He is tied for the league lead with nine outfield assists.
