DH Travis Hafner struck out three times for the fourth time this season. He is 1-for-17 on the Yankees homestand and has 30 hits in his last 169 at-bats since April 30.

SS Derek Jeter had the day off from his rehab assignment with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He will resume playing Wednesday and the Yankees feel that they need to see how his ankle handles playing consecutive games twice in the field before they can consider activating him.

3B Alex Rodriguez continued his rehab from a second hip surgery by playing in his fifth rehab game and third with Class A Tampa of the Florida State League. He went hitless in three at-bats (two strikeouts and a groundout) against Dunedin in a game that was resumed from June 30.

LHP CC Sabathia went the distance for the 37th time and 11th time as a Yankee. He also lost a game in which he went the distance for the ninth time and his last three against the Royals have been losses.

CF Brett Gardner did not extend his team record strikeout streak to 17 games and also ended an 0-for-16 skid with a first-inning bunt single. He is 5-for-34 with 10 strikeouts in July.

RHP Ivan Nova's last start was perhaps the best some of his teammates have ever seen him produce on the major league level. He tries for a second straight win on Wednesday. In two starts following a stint in the minors, Nova is 1-1 with a 2.87 ERA. He pitched his first career complete game in Friday's 3-2 win over the Orioles, allowing two runs and three hits while striking out 11. Nova is 1-1 with an 11.88 ERA in two career starts against the Royals.
