RHP Josh Beckett underwent surgery to treat his thoracic outlet syndrome in Dallas on Wednesday. The procedure, performed by Dr. Greg Pearl, included the removal of Beckett's first right rib to alleviate pressure on his nerves. Beckett is expected to be ready for spring training in 2014.

LHP Chris Capuano, who was temporarily bumped from the rotation when RHP Ricky Nolasco was acquired last Saturday, will start Thursday against the Rockies. In his last start, July 4, he gave up six runs (five earned) and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings of a 9-5 loss at Colorado. Capuano, who has persevered through two Tommy John surgeries, is 5-9 with a 4.24 ERA in 16 career appearances, 15 starts, against the Rockies. He had one of his four career complete games in Coors Field in July 2006.

SS Hanley Ramirez finished a triple short of the cycle Wednesday, and his solo homer leading off the 14th inning was the go-ahead run in the Dodgers' 6-5 victory. "My teammates and everybody here gives me that confidence. I really appreciate that. When you have that confidence, everything comes easy," Ramirez said. Ramirez, who had a career-high 19-game hitting streak stopped Tuesday, is hitting .409 on the season.

INF/OF Skip Schumaker lost the appeal of his two-game suspension for his part in the June 11 brawl between the Dodgers and the Diamondbacks and began serving the ban Wednesday. Schumaker was cited for "aggressive actions." He also will miss the opener of the Dodgers' home series against Colorado that begins Thursday. Arizona RHP Ian Kennedy did not appeal his 10-game suspension, while former D-backs INF Eric Hinske had his suspension decreased from five games to one.

RHP Carlos Marmol gave up a solo home run in his lone inning Wednesday afternoon during in his first appearance for Class A Rancho Cucamonga. Marmol, obtained from the Cubs for RHP Matt Guerrier last weekend, has been working on a delivery adjustment. Manager Don Mattingly said there is no timetable for Marmol's arrival in Los Angeles and that his role will not be determined until he arrives.
