RHP Rafael Soriano pitched a scoreless ninth Wednesday and has given up one run in his last 11 innings of work. Soriano, who has 24 saves to date, is 1-1 with a 2.13 ERA.

RF Jayson Werth went 2-for-3 with a solo homer Wednesday, capping the second set of back-to-back homers the Nats hit off Cliff Lee. He followed Ryan Zimmerman in the sixth, after Anthony Rendon and Wilson Ramos blasted consecutive homers one inning earlier. Werth has hit .322 with six homers and 21 RBIs since returning from the disabled list June 4. The ex-Phillie is 8-for-21 with three homers against his former club this season.

RHP Jordan Zimmermann, Thursday's starter, did not earn a decision in his previous start, a 5-4 Nationals victory over San Diego on July 6, lasting 5 1/3 innings and allowing three runs and five hits. Washington has won his last seven starts, and is 15-3 in his outings this season. He beat Philadelphia on May 24, but is 2-4 with a 4.62 ERA in seven career starts against the Phillies.

LHP Gio Gonzalez beat Philadelphia on Wednesday for his fourth straight victory. Gonzalez (7-3) allowed one run and six hits over seven innings, while striking out five and walking two. He threw 117 pitches, 74 for strikes.

SS Ian Desmond went 2-for-4 on Wednesday. He had been 1-for-8 in the series against the Phillies, and had managed one hit in his previous 11 trips altogether. Desmond is hitting .280 with 15 homers and 49 RBIs this season.
