2B Jose Altuve homered for the first time in 153 at-bats when he opened the fourth inning with a solo blast to left field off Athletics RHP A.J. Griffin. Altuve added a single in the eighth inning to record his team-leading 28th multi-hit game and later notched his 24th stolen base, which leads all major league second basemen.

RHP Jose Veras worked a perfect ninth inning Wednesday, marking his 16 scoreless inning over his last 17 appearances. Veras is 10-for-10 in save opportunities over that span, but he has recorded just one save at home since June 28, a stretch of 13 games. That lone save July 3 against the Tampa Bay Rays came in his lone save opportunity.

LHP Erik Bedard, a native of Ontario, will face the Toronto Blue Jays for the first time since May 14, 2007, when the Astros open a four-game series in Toronto on Thursday. Bedard did not factor into the decision in his previous outing against Toronto after allowing three runs on six hits over seven innings while pitching for the Baltimore Orioles. Bedard is 2-4 with a 5.00 ERA in 11 career starts against the Blue Jays.

RHP Bud Norris allowed three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out a season-high-tying seven batters over 6 1/3 innings. He has limited opponents to three runs or less in 16 of 21 starts this season and has posted 12 quality starts over his last 16 outings. Norris is 4-4 with a 2.92 ERA in 13 starts at Minute Maid Park this season.

C Carlos Corporan lifted the Astros to a lead with his two-run home run in the sixth inning, marking the fourth consecutive time his home run has either pulled the Astros even or pushed them in front. Of his 10 career home runs, the switch-hitting Corporan has hit nine left-handed.
