RHP Jeremy Guthrie improved to 10-7 with a 7-1 victory Thursday night over the Orioles, his former team. Guthrie is one shy of his most wins in a season. "That's obviously indicative of the way the team is playing," Guthrie said. He limited the Orioles to one run on six hits over six innings, while walking one and striking out five.
DH Billy Butler went 2-for-3 with a home run and double. He also drew his 53rd walk, which ranks fourth in the American League. His career high for walks is 69, set in 2010.
LF Alex Gordon hit .324 until May 30 when George Brett was named the interim hitting coach. He hit a puny .188 with Brett as the hitting coach. Brett, who resigned Thursday, joked that Gordon will be glad he is no longer the hitting coach. Gordon went 1-for-3 with a triple, a sacrifice fly and two RBIs in the 7-1 victory Thursday over the Orioles.
RHP James Shields, who starts Friday at Chicago, is 3-4 with a 4.27 ERA in 14 games against the White Sox. He is 0-1 with a 2.37 ERA against the White Sox this season, including a 1-0 Opening Day loss.
