LHP Marc Rzepczynski was recalled from Triple-A Memphis to replace RHP Carlos Martinez, giving the Cardinals three lefties out of the bullpen for their 11-game, 10-day trip that starts Friday night in Atlanta. Rzepczynski was 1-2 with a 3.07 ERA in 32 games for the Redbirds, allowing just one homer in 44 innings and fanning 31.
RHP Lance Lynn got better as the game went along Thursday night and was rewarded with his 12th win. After issuing four walks in the first three-plus innings, Lynn started pounding the strike zone. The result: He retired nine of his last 10 men and kept the team from taxing its bullpen going into a huge 11-game road trip. Lynn gave up five hits and four walks, but he allowed just one run in seven innings. He struck out six.
RHP Carlos Martinez was optioned to Triple-A Memphis after Wednesday night's game, when he pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning. Martinez will go back into the Redbirds' rotation. He was 3-2 with a 1.98 ERA in eight starts for Memphis before coming up to St. Louis for the second time earlier this month.
LHP John Gast (lat muscle tear) will undergo season-ending surgery Friday in Chicago. Gast went 2-0 in three May starts, but he was injured May 25 at the Los Angeles Dodgers and couldn't make headway in two months of rehabiliation.
RHP Adam Wainwright always enjoys pitching against his home-state team, the Atlanta Braves, whom he faces Friday night at Turner Field. Wainwright is 6-1 with a 2.98 ERA in seven starts against the Braves. He leads the National League in innings (154 2/3), wins (13) and walks per nine innings (0.99).
