MLB Team Report - San Francisco Giants - INSIDE PITCH
Now that we're in August, Hunter Pence seems to be one of the happiest big-leaguers.
When the July 31 trade deadline passed and Pence was still a Giant, he walked through the clubhouse with his fists raised, celebrating he wasn't dealt to another team. He has expressed his desire to play long term for the Giants and personally told GM Brian Sabean before the deadline he didn't want to be moved.
"I know they heard what I had to say," Pence said. "They said, 'Unless we get an offer that's crazy and knocks us off our feet, you're staying here and we want you next year.' "
Not only is Pence still a Giant, but Sabean said he'd consider open negotiations for new contracts for Pence and pitchers Tim Lincecum and Javier Lopez, all of whom can be eligible for free agency after the season.
"The fact they want to stay here despite our struggles is always a good thing," manager Bruce Bochy said. "It's important they want to be here and be Giants."
After going 1-for-4 in Friday's 4-1 win over Tampa Bay, Pence is hitting .279 with 14 homers, 25 doubles, four triples, 51 RBIs and 15 steals. He's 15-for-15 in steal attempts, and no player in the majors has as many steals without being caught.
MLB Team Report - San Francisco Giants - NOTES, QUOTES
STREAK: Won three
PAST 10 GAMES: 4-6
NEXT: Rays (David Price, 6-5, 3.57) at Giants (Tim Lincecum, 5-11, 4.61)
--1B Brandon Belt entered Friday night's game with only one hit in his last 19 at-bats, but, after sitting out the last three games, he found his stroke against Rays starter Chris Archer, going 3-for-4, including a home run and a triple. "He's been working on a few things and that's why we gave him three days off," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "I think it was good for him. He looked great."
--LHP Madison Bumgarner has recorded at least seven innings pitched and allowed two earned runs or fewer in his last nine starts, matching the longest such streak in the majors since Randy Johnson went 14 straight in 1999 for the Diamondbacks. He also matched his season high with 11 strikeouts (May 11 vs. ATL). All 11 strikeouts were swinging.
--RHP Sergio Romo improved to 26-for-30 in save opportunities with his save Friday night. He entered the game with one out in the ninth and Jose Lobaton on third base with his first career triple, and retired the final two batters to nail down the save. It was only the second time this season that he had collected a save of less than one inning (May 16 at Colorado).
QUOTE TO NOTE: "That's a good hitting team. Anytime you're able to battle through when you don't necessarily have the command you're used to having, it's tougher battling the whole time you are out there." -- LHP Madison Bumgarner, who equaled his season high with 11 strikeouts in a 4-1 victory over Tampa Bay.
