Tigers 4, Indians 2: Alex Avila hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the ninth inning as visiting Detroit rallied for its ninth consecutive victory.
With one run already in against Cleveland closer Chris Perez (4-2), Avila blasted a 1-0 pitch over the wall in left-center field to put the Tigers ahead for good and chase Perez from the game amid a chorus of boos. The blast made a winner out of reliever Al Alburquerque (2-2), while Joaquin Benoit worked the ninth to secure his 13th save.
Michael Brantley had two hits and scored twice for the Indians, who saw their 11-game home winning streak halted and fell four games behind the Tigers atop the American League Central.
Brantley got things started in the second inning, swatting a one-out single to center field and promptly stealing second. Jason Giambi brought him home two batters later with a line-drive single to right-center.
Cleveland doubled the lead in the fourth after Brantley stroked a two-out single and scored on Carlos Santana's double off the right-field wall.
