NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Warner Bros. will release "Winter's Tale," the directorial debut of screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, on February 14 of next year, the studio announced on Friday. Goldsman has a long and storied career as a screenwriter, winning an Oscar for his adaptation of "A Beautiful Mind."

The Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow film is based on Mark Helprin's 1983 novel, which is set in a mythic New York City and follows a thief, the woman he falls in love with, his guardian and an engineer. Goldsman adapted the book for the big screen, and his film stars Colin Farrell, Jessica Brown Findlay, Jennifer Connelly, William Hurt, Eva Marie Saint and Russell Crowe.

"It features a remarkable roster of acting talent and a sweeping, romantic story that's ideally suited for the holiday period," Warner Bros. domestic distribution chief Dan Fellman said in a statement. Fellman announced the date with international distribution chief Veronika Kawn Vandenberg, who remarke that the film would have a "broad appeal overseas" thanks to its international cast.

Goldsman is producing the movie with Marc Platt, Michael Tadross and Tony Allard while Kerry Foster and Village Roadshow chief Bruce Berman are executive producing.

The creative team for the film features several other Oscar winners and nominees, including director of photography Caleb Deschanel and composer Hans Zimmer. Warner Bros. will distribute the movie in North America and most international territories while Village Roadshow will handle distribution in select territories.
