RHP James Russell threw only three pitches in relief of starter Edwin Jackson on Friday night in San Diego. But the one he threw to Will Venable resulted in the Padres outfielder giving his club the lead for good in an 8-6 victory. Russell is 1-5 on the season.
1B Anthony Rizzo became the second-youngest left-handed hitting Cub to reach 20 home runs with his two-homer performance Wednesday against the Nationals. Billy Williams hit 25 when he was 23 years old in 1961. "Obviously he came up last year and did a nice job, but we forget that this is his first full year with the pressure on him," Cubs manager Dave Sveum said Friday. "So when the first full year gets done and it says 25 (home runs) and 80 (RBIs) a lot of players have gone through this game and haven't had 25 and 80 in their first full season."
RHP Edwin Jackson did not figure into the decision on Friday night at San Diego, extending his winless streak to 10 games against the Padres. Jackson allowed six runs (five earned) and 10 hits in six-plus innings. Jackson struck out four and walked none on 95 pitches (64 strikes). "Overall, I did a (crappy) job of holding a lead," Jackson said. "Your team goes out and gives you six runs and any starter that we have, we all feel the same way. If you can't hold a six-run lead, it's real disappointing."
OF Nate Schierholtz hit his 19th home run in the first inning in Friday's loss to the Padres. It is a career high for Schierholtz, who went 1-for-5 with three RBIs.
RHP Jeff Samardzija will make his 27th start when he takes the mound against the Padres on Saturday. Samardzija earned a complete-game win in an 11-1 Cubs' rout of Washington on Aug. 19. Samardzija allowed a run on six hits with five strikeouts and no walks. Against the Padres, he is 2-1 with a 2.95 ERA in five career starts. He received a no-decision, giving up three runs on four hits earlier this season.
RHP Neil Ramirez was acquired from the Rangers as the player to be named in the Matt Garza trade July 22. He was sent to Double-A Tennessee. Ramirez was 9-3 with a 3.84 ERA over 21 starts for Double-A Frisco this season.
