RHP Jake Arrieta earned his second victory and third quality start with the Cubs, allowing one run and three hits in 6 2/3 innings. In five starts with the Cubs, Arrieta is holding opponents to a .178 batting average with 21 strikeouts in 28 1/3 innings.

LHP Travis Wood (8-10, 3.09 ERA) takes on the Marlins in the series opener Monday afternoon. Wood has made 27 starts on the season, 21 of which have been quality starts. Wood has struggled in his three career starts against the Marlins, posting a 1-2 record with a 10.93 ERA.

RHP Eduardo Sanchez, who was 0-1 with a 5.68 ERA in four appearances for the Cubs, all in August, was designated for assignment. Sanchez, 24, was claimed off waivers from St. Louis on May 21. He was a combined 1-1 with three saves and a 3.38 ERA in 33 Triple-A appearances this year in the Cardinals and Cubs organizations.

RHP Alberto Cabrera, 24, was recalled from Triple-A Iowa, where he was 1-3 with a 7.08 ERA in 15 relief appearances. Earlier this season, Cabrera went 9-3 with a 3.20 ERA in 18 starts for Double-A Tennessee. He appeared in 25 major league games for the Cubs in 2012, going 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA.

OF Ryan Sweeney returned from the 60-day disabled list Sunday and reached base twice, including a first-inning, two-out RBI single that opened the scoring. Sweeney had been sidelined since June 30 due to a fractured rib.

RHP Scott Baker will make what could be his final rehab start Monday for Class A Kane County. Baker has been on the mend all year from Tommy John surgery performed in April 2012 while he was with the Twins. The Cubs will evaluate Baker after Monday's start. It's possible he could pitch for the big club in September.

RHP Pedro Strop, who struck out the lone batter he faced Sunday, has recorded scoreless outings in 24 of 26 relief appearances since joining the Cubs on July 2. Strop has a 2.19 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 24 2/3 innings with Chicago.

3B Luis Valbuena drew a pinch-hit, bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the eighth inning. He was activated from the 15-day disabled list prior to Sunday's game after recovering from a right oblique strain.
