WR DeAndre Hopkins missed the last two preseason games because of a concussion. He passed his last test in the concussion protocol, returned to practice and will start against San Diego.

OL David Quessenberry, a sixth-round pick who could play guard and tackle, suffered a season-ending foot injury in practice and is lost for the season.

FS Ed Reed is hoping to make his debut against the Chargers, but it's not likely. He's been practicing but not at full speed. He'll have to go all out in practice before the coaches will let him play. He's been on the sideline since undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his hip on April 30.

LG Wade Smith expects to start against San Diego after recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his knee. Because he's been out for three weeks, he'll need to get some breathers. Second-year man Ben Jones, who started in Smith's place in preseason, will spell Smith against the Chargers.

ILB Brian Cushing signed a six-year contract extension worth $52.5 million. Counting 2013, the last year on his original five-year contract, he's scheduled to make $55.643 million, including $21 million guaranteed and a signing bonus of $9 million.

OLB Whitney Mercilus missed the preseason because of a hamstring injury. He returned to practice and will start against the Chargers.
