RHP Tanner Scheppers had the key out of Sunday's 4-3 win over the Angels. The Angels had the potential tying run on third base with one out in the eighth inning and Hank Conger at the plate, but Scheppers struck him out with a 98-mph fastball. "Right there, I just want to keep it in front of the outfielders and give them an opportunity," he said. "I think (catcher) A.J. (Pierzynski) and I learned from the last time we faced Conger -- I wanted to stay away from him and he was able to reach out and get a hit. So I learned from that and stayed inside on him." Scheppers has not allowed a run in five consecutive outings, covering five innings.
RHP Yu Darvish will start Monday against the Pirates. Darvish, who has never faced the Pirates in his career, is 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA in his past four starts, all Rangers losses.
RF Alex Rios homered and doubled on Sunday against the Angels and is now hitting .297 (30-for-101) with four homers and 12 RBIs in 26 games since being acquired in a trade with the White Sox on Aug. 9. He hit .429 (9-for-21) on the six-game road trip to Oakland and Anaheim.
2B Ian Kinsler hit leadoff Sunday against the Angels after 36 consecutive starts in the No. 3 spot. The Rangers went 24-12 in those games. Kinsler entered the game hitting .167 (19-for-114) in day games, the worst in the American League. He went 1-for-5 Sunday, but the hit was a double that keyed the Rangers' two-run rally in the seventh inning that helped them take a 4-3 lead.
LHP Matt Harrison will have surgery on his right shoulder on Monday. Harrison, the Rangers' opening day starter, has already undergone two surgeries on his back this year to repair a herniated disk. Harrison is expected to be ready in time for spring training.
