MILWAUKEE (Reuters) - The University of Wisconsin-Madison asked students to "shelter in place" on Wednesday evening following a report of shots fired near the campus, according to an alert posted on the university's website.

The university said in the alert that police were searching for a suspect last seen heading toward university residence halls.

"The situation is not an 'active shooter' but a search for a suspect," the alert said.

City police said in a statement that they responded to at least one gunshot fired at 6:23 p.m. local time. No injuries were reported.

A witness told police the suspect was seen fleeing into a building belonging to Madison Area Technical College in downtown Madison. The college building was searched and no suspect was found, police said.
