RHP Jeremy Guthrie is one of several players serving as Major League Baseball Ambassadors this offseason, a program that took him in December to China. "The coaches here in China are making a big difference," Guthrie was quoted. "With their dedication, the hitters are polished; the pitchers have phenomenal mechanics and great arms. I can see that baseball in this country is more advanced thanks to the program here."

LF Alex Gordon hit .255 with a .323 on-base percentage in 119 games as the Royals' leadoff hitter last season. Gordon will be dropped to the middle of the order this season with the addition of OF Norichika Aoki. Gordon hit .391 in 18 games and 78 plate appearances while batting third in 2013. He hit .224 with three home runs and 10 RBIs in 18 games, 80 plate-appearances, hitting fourth.

3B Mike Moustakas, who had a disappointing 2013 season, is trying to rediscover his stroke while playing winter ball in Venezuela. In his first six games and 25 at-bats, he is hitting .240-.296-.520 with two home runs and eight RBIs. Moustakas' manager is Pedro Grifol, the Royals' hitting coach.

2B Emilio Bonifacio finished strong last season after being acquired in a trade with the Blue Jays and would be the leading in-house candidate to start at second if the Royals do not sign or trade for a second baseman. He hit .285 with a .352 on-base percentage in 42 games with Kansas City, while stealing 16 bases in 18 attempts. In 94 games with the Blue Jays, he hit a meager .218 with a .258 on-base percentage and was caught stealing six times in 18 attempts. "We're very pleased with Boni and we're just staying open-minded as we move forward with our team," Royals general manager Dayton Moore said. Emilio's younger brother, Jorge, is one of the top outfield and hitting prospects in the Royals' organization.

OFs Justin Maxwell, Jarod Dyson and David Lough are all out of options. The Royals have six outfielders on their roster, so one could be dealt before spring training. A possible trade of Maxwell to the Dodgers for INF Dee Brown was among the talk as the winter meetings ended.
