LHP Brian Matusz pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief Friday, and he has not allowed a run in eight July appearances. Matusz allowed one hit while striking out three.
3B Manny Machado was out of the lineup for a fourth consecutive game Friday, when back spasms sidelined him yet again. Machado told The Baltimore Sun that he expects to be in the lineup before the end of the Seattle series, which includes afternoon games Saturday and Sunday.
RHP Kevin Gausman matched one of the best starting pitchers in the American League for seven innings Friday night, when neither Gausman nor Seattle's Felix Hernandez factored into the decision. Gausman, a rookie, allowed one earned run off seven hits over 6 2/3 innings and left with the game tied 1-1. Hernandez was replaced by a reliever to start the top of the next inning.
DH Nelson Cruz lined the first pitch he saw 358 feet over the fence in left field for his 29th home run of the season Friday. His 29 home runs are four short of a personal career high for a season, and he's already matched his highest season total since 2009.
1B Chris Davis delivered his team-high eighth game-winning RBI of the season with a solo home run in the top of the 10th inning of Friday's 2-1 win over Seattle. It marked Davis's 17th home run of the season.
RHP Bud Norris could be set up for failure on Saturday, when he's scheduled to start an afternoon game in Seattle. Norris has been subpar both in road games (4-4, 4.42 ERA) and in day games (2-2, 4.30 ERA) this season. Since 2011, he has gone 13-28 with a 5.10 ERA on the road and has a 5-16 record and 4.49 ERA in day games.
