UN deputy chief to attend European Development Days
UNITED NATIONS, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- UN Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson will attend the eighth edition of the "European Development Days", which is taking place in Brussels on Nov. 26-27, a UN spokesman told reporters here on Tuesday.
"The deputy secretary-general will fly to Brussels today to participate in the European Development Days on behalf of the secretary-general," said Martin Nesirky, spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, at the daily briefing.
"During his visit, he will meet with the President of the European Commission, with the Commissioner for development and the Commissioner for environment, as well as other officials and Ministers attending the event," Nesirky said.
Organized by the European Commission and launched in 2006, European Development Days is Europe's premier forum on international affairs and development cooperation.
The thread of this year's edition is the post-2015 debate and the need to build a consensus for a strong common European position advocating a joined up approach to address global poverty and sustainable development.
The spokesman also said that the UN deputy chief will travel to Geneva on Wednesday to speak at the council session of the International Organization for Migration on behalf of the UN chief Ban Ki-moon.
The deputy secretary-general will return to New York on Nov. 28, Nesirky said.
