India special court sentences extradited underworld don to 7 yrs in jail

NEW DELHI, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- A special court in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad Thursday sentenced to seven years in jail extradited underworld don Abu Salem in a fake passport case dating back to 2001.

Judge M.V. Ramana Naidu of the special court of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) pronounced the judgment Thursday morning, just days after holding the Indian gangster guilty under different sections of the Indian Penal Code for obtaining a passport under a fictitious name and address from Kurnool district of southeastern Andhra Pradesh state.

Salem, also an accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case, is currently lodged in the financial capital's high-security Arthur Road jail, after being extradited to India in 2005 from Portugal where he was living with his girlfriend and Bollywood starlet Monica Bedi.

India had assured Portugal that the gangster would not be handed out death penalty if found guilty in the Mumbai serial blasts in which over 350 people were killed.
