G77 chair urges international community to reinforce commitment to poverty eradication at UN conference

SUVA, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- A high-ranking Fijian official has urged the international community to reinforce commitment to poverty eradication at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) General Conference in Peru in Fiji's capacity as the chair of the Group of 77 plus China, Fiji's Ministry of Information said Tuesday.

Jiko Luveni, Fiji's minister for social welfare, women and poverty alleviation told the UN conference on Tuesday (Fiji time) that as the world approaches the Post-2015 Development Agenda, the international community must reinforce its commitment to poverty eradication, saying "Poverty eradication remains the greatest global challenge today and is an indispensable requirement for sustainable development."

The theme of the UN conference, held in Lima, Peru, is "Towards Partnerships for a New Industrial Cooperation for Inclusive and Sustainable Growth."

Luveni underlined the crucial role that women play in attaining poverty eradication, economic growth and sustainable development, encouraging UNIDO to step up its projects for productive work for youths in developing countries.

She told the conference that the Group of 77 believes that for developing countries to achieve inclusive and sustainable economic growth, they need an enabling global environment to complement their national efforts in achieving sustainable industrialization.

Emphasising the importance of energy, the Fijian minister said the Group of 77 "calls on UNIDO to continue its role as a catalyst in increasing industrial energy efficiency and promoting renewable energy for industrial application."

Luveni told the conference that the role of technology is particularly important for developing countries to embark on a new industrial revolution, saying that it was imperative that the international community "take urgent actions to bridge the technological divide so as to promote industrialization and inclusive growth across the developing world."
