(Recast) Libyan police officer gunned down in Benghazi

TRIPOLI, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- A Libyan police officer was gunned down on Wednesday morning in the eastern city of Benghazi, security and medical sources told Xinhua.

Unidentified assailants threw a hand grenade on Hatem Jumua Oraibi's car in front of the Department of Passports and Nationality where he worked.

The spokesperson of Jalaa Hospital in Benghazi Fadia Barghati told Xinhua: "Oraibi arrived at the hospital alive but later died of the wounds he sustained in the attack."

Despite the efforts by the government to quell the violence, the security situation in Benghazi, the birthplace of the 2011 uprising, remains unstable.

Libyan army members and security personnel have been targeted and killed in series of attacks in Benghazi and Derna.

Two years after the 2011 uprising, the authorities are still struggling to rein in the armed militia groups roaming the country. Murders and kidnappings of security officers as well as political activists are registered on daily basis, leaving a number of people dead.
