Palestinian prayers, Israeli police clash in old city of Jerusalem

RAMALLAH, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- Israeli police forces and Palestinian prayers clashed Friday in the compound of al-Aqsa Mosque in the old city of Jerusalem, Israeli and Palestinian sources confirmed.

The clashes broke out after the prayers organized a rally to condemn the Israeli measures in the city, the Palestinian sources told Xinhua.

The Israeli police locked the gates of the mosque and fired tear gas canisters at the prayers. Dozens of the prayers suffered suffocation, according to the source.

After the clashes, the police forces left the area of the mosque and stationed at the gates of the old city of Jerusalem and kept the gates of the mosques closed.

Meanwhile, Israel Radio, citing security sources, said that a group of Palestinian youths threw stones at the Israeli police forces, which were stationed outside the mosque. No policeman was injured.

The Palestinians want east Jerusalem, which includes al-Aqsa Mosque to be the capital of their state.
