GENEVA, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- On the occasion of the Human Rights Day which is to be observed Tuesday, the United Nations human rights chief Monday called for enhanced political will, human and financial resources to protect and promote human rights.
Navi Pillay, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said in a statement that with the fundamentals for protecting and promoting human rights largely in place, including international human rights law and standards, and institutions to interpret the laws, monitor compliance and apply them to new and emerging human rights issues, the key is to implement those laws and standards to make enjoyment of human rights a reality on the ground.
Meanwhile Pillay warned agaisnt the lack of political will and the human and financial resources, and noted the challenges in the protection of human rights, citing examples such as women, ethnic, racial and religious minorities, migrants, and even certain individuals continuing to suffer discrimination, violence and persecution, as well as internal conflicts continuing to produce horrendous and widespread human rights abuses.
In addition, the official drew attention to the complex new challenges such as climate change and global terrorist movements, especially the transformation brought by new technologies.
Pillay appealed for enhanced efforts to be done at the international level to transform human rights from abstract promises to genuine improvement in the daily lives of all people.
