1st LD Writethru: Grybauskaite reelected president of Lithuania: CEC

VILNIUS, May 26 (Xinhua) -- Incumbent Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite defended her presidency after defeating Social Democratic contender Zigmantas Balcytis in a presidential runoff, the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) said on Monday.

Grybauskaite handily succeeded in winning the historically second term of Lithuania's presidency, by scoring 57.87 percent of the votes, according to the CEC.

Balcytis, her opponent, lagging far behind, gathered 40.14 percent of the votes.

CEC showed the figure of turnout in the second round as 47.31 percent which is lower than the 52.23-percent turnout in the first round held two weeks ago.

The presidential election on Sunday was held in conjunction with elections of European Parliament which would otherwise face a much lower turnout rate in Lithuania, according to local analysts.

Grybauskaite will start her next term of presidency on July 12, said CEC on Monday.
