Yemeni armed forces dismantle booby-trapped car

ADEN, Yemen, May 26 (Xinhua) -- The Yemeni armed forces found and then dismantled a booby-trapped car with a large amount of explosives in the country's southeastern province of Shabwa on Monday, the Defense Ministry said.

"Soldiers of the 19th Armored Brigade intercepted an explosive- laden car before it reached its main target in Behan region of Shabwa. Experts of the anti-bomb disposal unit are attempting to defuse the explosives in it," the Defense Ministry reported in a short text message obtained by Xinhua.

A military official in Shabwa confirmed to Xinhua that "an al- Qaida would-be suicide bomber was detained during the botched terrorist attack and the whole area now has been cordoned off by army soldiers."

On Sunday, Yemen's police, backed by units of anti-terrorism forces, carried out an operation against some al-Qaida hideouts in the Arhab region, near the capital Sanaa, the state-run Saba News Agency reported.

The raid resulted in the killing of four militants and a senior commander of the Yemen-based al-Qaida branch wanted for armed attacks targeting foreigners and high-ranking Yemeni politicians, according to Saba.

Security forces seized homemade explosives and heavy weapons during Sunday's raid.

Earlier this week, scores of suspected al-Qaida gunmen launched more than six attacks including shootings, bombings and arson, leaving 31 people killed and several others injured in Yemen's southeastern province of Hadramout.

The Yemeni military and security forces, with U.S. support, have recently intensified operations against suspected al-Qaida strongholds throughout the country, killing many non-Yemeni al- Qaida suspects.

However, al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), considered a major threat to the Yemeni government and neighboring oil-rich Saudi Arabia, has vowed to hit back in Yemen's main cities, including the capital Sanaa.

AQAP militants have retaliated by launching suicide car attacks and roadside bombings across the impoverished Arab country.
