Int'l envoys meet Burundi's president over elections

BUJUMBURA, June 2 (Xinhua) -- International envoys to the Great Lakes region on Monday met with Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza to ensure that the country's 2015 elections are being prepared in an inclusive way, UN Envoy to the Great Lakes region Mary Robinson said here.

The envoys also included those from the European Union, the African Union and the United States.

"We're pleased to have met the president individually. We came here as a team of envoys for the Great Lakes region to make sure elections due next year in Burundi are being prepared in an inclusive way," said Robinson. "We want to emphasize that the process leading up to elections should be open, transparent and peaceful."

The electoral process should offer an equal political space and equal opportunities to all political actors without distinction, she said.

"We're pleased that the president confirmed that he wishes to have international monitors. A visit will soon be made to analyze when the monitors should come to support the electoral process," said Robinson.

She also indicated that the envoys commended the adoption of the Electoral Code and the code of conduct for political actors ahead of the east African country's general elections.
