MEXICO CITY, June 2 (Xinhua) -- Mexican Foreign Minister Jose Antonio Meade met with the secretary general of the Organization of American States (OAS), Jose Miguel Insulza, in the lead up to the 44th general assembly in Paraguay, the Foreign Affairs Ministry (SRE) said Monday.

Foreign ministers attending the June 3-5 meeting will tackle the major challenges facing the region, including eradicating poverty, reducing the wealth gap, and expanding access to education and health coverage.

Insulza hopes the assembly will prompt countries to adopt the Plan of Action of the Social Charter of the Americas, which was approved at the 42nd assembly in Cochabamba, Bolivia, saying: "It is a good time to move ahead (with the implementation) of our Social Charter."

The Washington, D.C.-based OAS gathers more than 30 countries of the Americas to promote regional solidarity, but is heavily influenced by U.S. foreign policy, leading to conflicts with socialist governments such as Cuba's and Venezuela's.
