Symposium to initiate inclusive IGAD-led peace talks for South Sudan convenes in Ethiopia

ADDIS ABABA, June 6 (Xinhua) -- As part of the ongoing mediation process led by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) for South Sudan, a two-day multi-stakeholder symposium was opened on Friday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The symposium has brought together representatives of South Sudanese society, including delegates from the government, opposition, political parties, faith based groups, civil society and traditional leaders.

According to a statement from the Office of the IGAD Special Envoys for South Sudan, the main objectives of the symposium include, to initiate the inclusive phase of the IGAD-mediated South Sudan peace talks, based on a round-table, multi-party, representative from at among others.

At the opening of the Symposium, Tedros Adhanom, Ethiopian Foreign Minister, noted that the peace process must include all stakeholders and their views and that IGAD would continue with its effort of the peace process.

Lazarus Sumbeiywo, IGAD Special Envoy, said the main elements of the agenda include negotiation on permanent cease-fire, transitional governance, and governance institution among others.

Speaking on the occasion, Chinese Ambassador to Ethiopia, Xie Xiaoyan noted that China has always committed to supporting the effort made by IGAD in mediating the two parties in South Sudan to cease-fire and national reconciliation.
