ST. PETERSBURG, July 27 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin presided on Sunday over Russia's Navy Day celebrations in the port of Severomorsk in the Murmansk region.
During his visit to the base of Russia's Northern Fleet, Putin paid his tributes to fallen Russian war heroes at an iconic local monument and attended a large-scale Navy Day parade.
The parade featured a number of the Northern Fleet's leading naval vessels, including the cruiser Admiral Kuznetsov, the latest- generation submarine Yuri Dologoruky, as well as nuclear-capable vessels Peter the Great and Nizhny Novgorod.
During the festivities, the Russian President offered his regards to serving Navy personnel and veterans alike on the occasion of Navy Day 2014.
Russia's Navy Day is celebrated each year on the last Sunday of July. This year, it is marked with a renewed urgency given Russia' s deteriorating diplomatic relations with the United States and the European Union.
