Shelley and Daniel win marathon gold medals at Commonwealth Games

GLASGOW, July 27 (Xinhua) -- Australian Michael Shelley won the men's marathon gold while Kenya's Flomena Cheyech Daniel took the women's event at the 20th Commonwealth Games here on Sunday.

Shelley, 30, who won the silver four years ago in Delhi and finished 16th in the London Olympics, pulled away with five kilometers left, winning the title in two hours 11 minutes 15 seconds, his personal best.

Kenyan Stephen Chemlany, a silver medal winner in the 2011 Berlin marathon, finished second with 43 seconds behind.

Uganda's Philip Kiplimo was third to earn his country the first Commonwealth marathon medal in history.

Daniel won the women's race in 2:26:45, ahead of compatriot Caroline Kilel (2:27:10) and Australian Jess Trengove (2:30:12).

"Now I have had a bit more experience, to come away with my first win is indescribable," said Shelley. "I dug deep and I was hoping I wouldn't blow-up like I have done in the past.

"You just try to run the best you possibly can and it was a dream to be honest. I'm still buzzing."
