2 killed in clashes with gunmen in Lebanon

BEIRUT, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Two people were killed in clashes with gunmen infiltrating Lebanon on Saturday through the eastern border town of Arsal after the Lebanese army arrested a Syrian national affiliated with an al-Qaida-related group, the state-run National News Agency reported.

The gunmen stormed a police station in the town and clashed with army troops and local residents, according to the report.

The clashes came after the Lebanese army arrested a member of the al-Qaida affiliate al-Nusra Front, Imad Ahmed Jomaa, while he was being transferred to a hospital after sustaining injuries during battles with the Syrian army on the outskirts of Arsal.

The army confirmed in a statement the arrest of Jomaa, saying that "Jomaa was arrested on an army checkpoint in the outskirts of Arsal at noon."

Investigations showed that Jomaa belongs to the al-Nusra Front and was handed over to the competent judiciary authority for further questioning, the army said.

The town of Arsal backs the rebellion against Syrian President Bashar Assad and has been used as a conduit for weapons and rebels to enter Syria, while also serving as a refuge for people fleeing the Syrian conflict.
