ASEAN ministry officers begin English language training with Brunei Armed Forces

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- Thirty officers, including a senior one from six ASEAN military forces were initiated into an eight-week English Language course conducted by the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) Training Institute in Brunei, English newspaper The Brunei Times reported on Tuesday.

The English Language Course for Foreign Armed Forces 2014 began on Monday with the participation of six ASEAN member states: Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar, Indonesia and Thailand.

The eight-week course is aimed at enhancing proficiency in English and building confidence for communicating in English. Participants will prepare presentations in English, practice their writing, speaking, reading and listening skills in English with some knowledge of English grammar.

The ceremony was launched by Commandant of the RBAF Training Institute, Lt Col Hasmee Hj Abd Wahab at the Halbi Lecture Room, Evolution Center Training Institute, Penanjong Garrison. The commandant in his speech highlighted the pivotal role that English language played especially in its stature as the world's prominently spoken language.

"English is expanding rapidly in non-Western countries like Southeast Asia, becomes a common communication tool worldwide and achieve the status of the most dominant language," the commandant said.

"It has become a medium of communication especially for those who do not speak the same language," he said.

According to him, the language was currently used as the lingua franca for regional cooperation in the ASEAN organization.

"Many countries recognize the extraordinary importance of English as a language of wider communication in Asia and hence, put a redoubled emphasis on English language teaching."

On the English language training course, Lt Col Hasmee said the training institute has successfully conducted four courses since its inception in 2010.

"This course represents the Ministry of Defense and Royal Brunei Armed Forces' continued humble efforts to enhance Brunei Darussalam's bilateral relations and defense diplomacy with ASEAN countries", said Lt Col Hasmee.
