SEOUL, March 15 (Yonhap) -- South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics Co. unveiled the Galaxy S4 phone, the latest in its flagship Galaxy S line-up, in a New York launch event as it moves to solidify its dominance in the global smartphone market.
In the event live streamed worldwide on Thursday (New York time), Samsung Electronics introduced the Galaxy S4 with a 5-inch full HD Super AMOLED display, jumping into the race for smartphones with bigger and brighter screens.
The flagship phone that comes with a quad-core or octa-core processor depending on the market will be released in both third generation and long-term generation versions, according to the company.
Samsung Electronics plans to roll out the model in the second quarter via 327 operators in 155 countries, the company said, without providing a detailed schedule.
The Galaxy S4 is the latest in Samsung's successful Galaxy S line-up that has sold more than 100 million units worldwide.
"With the Galaxy S4, Samsung is again going to enhance the way we live," said Samsung Electronics' mobile chief Shin Jong-kyun, referring to the new user experience features added to the phone.
As the company had hinted in pre-released teasers, the Galaxy S4 comes with features that detect a user's face, voice and motions to enable screen control without directly touching the device.
The "Smart Pause" feature, for instance, pauses a video when a user looks away then resumes it when the user turns back to the screen. The "Smart Scroll" feature also allows a user to scroll up and down without touching the screen, according to the company.
The Galaxy S4 debut in rival Apple's home turf comes roughly a year after Samsung Electronics launched the Galaxy S3 phone in late May.
Thanks to the flagship model that sold more than 40 million units worldwide, Samsung emerged as the world's biggest handset maker and topped long-time market leader Nokia Oyj.
The South Korean tech giant also continued its record profit streak last year, fueled by the robust performance of its IT & Mobile Communications unit, which covers smartphone sales.
