SEOUL, March 22 (Yonhap) -- South Korean President Park Geun-hye plans to attend a ceremony next week commemorating the third anniversary of North Korea's sinking of a warship that killed all 46 South Koreans on board, her spokesman said Friday.
Park plans to pay tribute to the 46 Navy sailors who died in the March 26 attack and to a senior Navy diver who died during underwater search operations, presidential spokesman Yoon Chang-jung said in a press briefing.
The ceremony will be held at the national cemetery in the central city of Daejeon next Tuesday.
Park's attendance comes amid escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula following North Korea's repeated war threats in response to new U.N. sanctions for its latest nuclear test, and this week's joint military exercises between South Korea and the United States.
