SEOUL, April 2 (Yonhap) -- South Korean display giant LG Display Co. widened its lead over global rivals last year in the market for liquid crystal display (LCD) panels that are 9.1 inches or larger, market data showed Tuesday.
Shipments by LG Display accounted for 29 percent of the total 754 million units shipped globally last year, up from 27.9 percent the previous year, according to the monthly data by market researcher DisplaySearch. LG Display's share for 2010 stood at 26 percent.
The large LCD panels are usually used for computer monitors, laptop computer screens and TVs.
Samsung Display Co., another South Korean tech firm, claimed 21.7 percent of large-area shipments, while Taiwanese players Chimei Innolux Corp. and AU Optronics Corp. chalked up 17 percent and 15.9 percent, respectively.
The data also showed that LG Display cemented its lead in terms of revenue.
LG Display's revenue in the segment amounted to US$22.27 billion, or 28 percent, of the total last year, dwarfing Samsung Display's 25.1 percent stake worth $19.98 billion.
The overall large-area segment saw a 6.8-percent rise in revenue to reach $79.54 billion last year.
