China probing Japanese assemblyman over alleged possession of drugs

BEIJING, Nov. 15 (Yonhap) -- A 70-year-old Japanese assemblyman has been detained since a fortnight ago at a Chinese airport on suspicion of possessing drugs, the Chinese foreign ministry said, adding that an investigation has been under way.

Takuma Sakuragi, the septuagenarian assemblyman of Japanese municipal government of Inazawa, was taken into custody on Oct. 31 at the Baiyun airport in Guangzhou.

Sakuragi "was detained by the public security authority at the Baiyun airport of Guangdong Province for carrying drugs with him," ministry spokesman Hong Lei told reporters at a regular briefing.

China informed the Japanese side of the detention and that a "further investigation on the case is still ongoing," Hong said.
