S. Korean defense chief departs for UAE

SEOUL, Dec. 9 (Yonhap) -- South Korean Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin on Monday departed for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for talks with his counterpart on increasing military and defense industry cooperation between the two countries, his ministry said.

The three-day trip also includes a visit to South Korea's military contingent stationed in the country.

The two sides have developed close cooperative ties since Seoul dispatched a contingent of troops to the UAE in 2011.

The "Ahk" unit of some 150 troops has been stationed in the eastern UAE region of Al Ain to help train UAE troops in anti-terrorism and parachute infiltration, and to conduct joint drills. "Ahk" means "brother" in Arabic.
